Overview

Located in the bustling neighborhood of Tanjung Tokong, Penang, Fettes Park Coffee Shop stands as a beloved destination for authentic Malaysian hawker fare. This longstanding coffee shop is a collective of varied stalls, each specializing in iconic dishes that weave together Penang’s rich culinary heritage. From its modest setting at 38, Jalan Fettes, the shop offers a genuine street food experience far from polished cafes but rich in flavor and tradition.

The charm of Fettes Park lies in its honest approach to local classics. The Char Koay Teow here pays tribute to decades of hawker craft, featuring silky rice noodles mingling with duck eggs, blood cockles, and succulent prawns, all stir-fried with the perfect hint of wok hei that delivers a smoky, savory punch. Patrons who appreciate a balanced texture and bold flavors will find themselves returning for this signature plate.

Equally compelling is the Hokkien Mee, a bowl of prawn broth comfort topped with a mix of rice vermicelli and yellow noodles, pork slices, and fresh vegetables. The interplay of sweetness from the seafood and heat from the sambal provides a seasoning balance that invigorates the palate and warms the soul—an experience beyond a simple noodle soup, capturing the essence of Malaysian culinary depth.

Beyond noodles, the coffee shop’s various stalls offer heartier choices like Roasted Pork and Chicken, Roasted Duck and BBQ Pork, and the lesser-known but locally adored Economy Fried Bee Hoon with Egg Omelet. Each dish reflects traditional recipes, preserving flavors that Penangites cherish. The economy rice (Chap Fun) stall, highlighted for its quality mixed rice offerings, is a particular draw for those seeking convenience without sacrificing taste.

While the ambience is straightforward and a bit aged, with an atmosphere that leans toward casual and communal dining, it suits the coffee shop’s purpose well. The space is functional rather than fancy, catering primarily to locals and visitors looking for fast service, generous portions, and authentic flavors. The seating may be simple and the environment occasionally humid, but the steady flow of regulars speaks volumes about its enduring popularity.

For breakfast or brunch, Fettes Park Coffee Shop serves up not only food but a place where local culture and culinary stories meet. The adept vendors behind each stall, some with decades of experience, ensure consistency and familiarity in every dish served. Whether one is a first-time visitor eager to sample classic Penang street food or a local craving the dependable flavors of home, this coffee shop delivers a straightforward, satisfying experience that captures the heart of Malaysian street dining.

Your standard Malaysian coffee shop. Has a number of stalls serving different dishes - char koay teow, koay teow thng, mee goreng, Hokkien mee etc. setting is pretty basic but comfortable. Good selection of drinks. Service is very fast. A good option for breakfast or brunch.

You can find many of the Penang street food here. We tried the Keoy Teow Theng and the Char Teow Keoy. The Teow Keoy Theng is very good (the minced pork and the soup base are very tasty) but the Char Keoy Teow is not good (the texture of the Koey Teow is too soft). We saw many people order the curry mee which must be good. We will try it next time.

mee goreng is ok. hokkien mee is soupy conflict, between the sweet richness of the pork and prawn, and the heat of chilli and sambal. tip the spoon, and the balance, if you dare. winner is you, for now at least. and whatever else, don't call it prawn mee here.

The Economy Rice (Chap Fun) stall here serves one of the best mixed rice in Tg Bungah Fettes Park area. Fettes Park Coffee Shop is a popular dining venue but is a little aged and dark, so most people prefer to dabao (pack back) as it is a little hot and humid too. Other stand outs are the Chicken Rice and the Yam Rice Yong Tau Foo. Go try the Chap Fun if you’re near Fettes Park

Breakfast @ Fettes Park Coffee Shop. . The variety of hawker stalls at Fettes Park Coffee Shop has remained more or less the same throughout the years. Prices have also remained slightly more affordable as compared to markets within the city. . Freshly made-to-order, the Apong Kosong / Pancake Plain (MYR RM3.50 for 5 pieces) is a fluffy fragile thin pancake. . Shatteringly crisp at the edges, slightly fluffy chewy towards the middle, each bite has a grainy bready sweet flavour that is so fragrant. . The master-hawker behind the Char Koay Teow (MYR RM6) here has been serving for well over 20 years. . The silky smooth koay teow rice noodles is stir-fried with wispy duck eggs, crisp bean sprouts, bouncy blood cockles, crispy pork lard, chewy lup cheong / dried cured Chinese pork sausage, crisp spring onions, and fresh deshelled large prawns. . Less oily but still as tasty, each mouthful carries bold smoky aroma of wok hei / breath of the wok, then you get the delicious savoury eggy sweet salty spice flavours, with a more pronounced sweet spicy kick. . Another favourite of the locals here, the Hock Kian Prawn Mee (MYR RM6) sees brisk business. . And no wonder, the hearty bowl of warm prawn soup / broth, filled with silky rice vermicelli noodles and chewy yellow wheat noodles is pure comfort food, with its enticing meaty shrimpy savoury salty sweet spicy flavours. . Garnished with crisp bean sprouts, crunchy kang kong, tender sliced pork, chewy dried shrimp, bouncy hard boiled egg, and crisp fried shallots, all of which pick up the lovely flavours of the prawn soup / broth. . Pretty decent Curry Mee (MYR RM5) here, features silky thick rice vermicelli noodles, crisp bean sprouts, crunchy string beans, bouncy blood cockles, chewy cuttlefish, and spongy dried tofu bean curd puffs, combining for vegetal grainy sweet savoury spice flavour.

Tried the char kway teow @ 8.00 a plate. Serving size is small. I don't find their CKT any different. It's nice, but not unforgettable. Plenty paid parking opposite the restaurant but it's full at 9.30 am on a weekday when I visited. Needed to wait about a minute for a space. About the tea, it's 2.20 a cup. Tastes very diluted and not generous with the milk. Definitely a 2/5. Just the looks will tell it's not up to standard.
